a snake in a trance |
Description of Animations: flute, charm, charmers, snakes, turbans, music "Snake-charming.
The remarkable power exercised by certain middle eastern peoples over poisonous serpents is distinctly mentioned in the Bible, and probably alluded to by St. James in 3:7. the species most generally operated upon are the Indian cobra, the African cobra, common to N. Africa and Syria, and the horned viper, which has a similar distribution. The charmers generally extract the poison-fangs before the snakes are subjected to their skill. The snake-charmers employ a flute and a drum during their performances; and carry the snakes in baskets." Murray
